The 12 lead ECG is an analysis of your hearts electrical activity. Ten leads are attached to specific points on your chest, arms and legs with sticky electrodes (sensors), and an electrical print out is performed.
The technician may need to shave, and lightly rub and clean your skin with alcohol wipes to ensure a clear recording. It is the most commonly ordered heart investigation and is used to diagnose many conditions including heart attacks, heart block and atrial fibrillation.
An ECG is often required for followup visits to monitor your response to changes in medication or to show evidence of new heart conditions.
